This was a storybook first hunt for Evan. It just does not "usually" happen like this and I hope it does not spoil him as we know you can hunt for a long time and not even see an animal. We were only in the tent/blind for 50 minutes. When we hit the turkey call at 20 minutes, a turkey gobbled more than 150 yards away.
When we called at 40 minutes, a turkey gobbled within 50 yards. I told him we have to be "really" quiet now and look for the turkey to come to us. I was looking behind the blind when Evan whispered "Dad! There are three turkeys in front of me." I said "Don't shoot, we have to make sure it has a beard." He said "They all have beards!" and he was right. All three were shooters and over 20 pounds.
I was caught so off guard that I forgot to have him take the safety off on the crossbow after we turned on the laser sight. However, that worked out too because the extra time it took to switch off the safety allowed the birds to get directly in front of his shooting window (just like the practice shots into a target he took the night before).
I've never seen him so excited. This morning he wanted pictures to take to school. Guess what we're having for supper tonight!
Thanks to Arrow Precision LLC for helping us get the crossbow set up!!
